Safety shoes with the FO (Fuel Oil resistant) requirement are equipped with soles that resist prolonged contact with hydrocarbons such as mineral oils, fuels and petroleum derivatives, without undergoing structural alterations. The certification test involves immersing the sole in trimethylpentane (isooctane) for a defined period: the volume of the sole must not increase by more than 12% and the loss of mass must not exceed 10%. FO certified safety shoes are suitable for mechanics, service station operators, vehicle and machinery maintenance workers, refinery personnel, workshops and any industrial environment where the floor is subject to contamination by oils or fuels. The FO requirement is mandatory under the 2011 standard, while it becomes an optional requirement under the 2022 standard.
